Sustainable Halloween Ideas

Updated: Nov 9

“The scariest thing about Halloween is the plastic.” Halloween is one of the most wasteful days of the year - from food waste to plastic waste. Last year, the equivalent of 83 million plastic bottles in Halloween costumes were wasted in the UK. It doesn’t have to be this way, and you should still be able to enjoy Halloween festivities in a more sustainable manner. Here are a few areas we can improve in this year.

Did you know that one billion pounds of pumpkin ends up in the landfill each year in the US? Pumpkins also require a lot of water to produce. You don’t necessarily have to stop buying pumpkins altogether, but there are ways to be much more responsible in using them, and the environment will thank you for it. Instead of wasting your entire pumpkin, here are some ideas for things you can do with it:

  • Make pumpkin puree

  • Roast the seeds with seasonings and eat as a snack

  • Make recipes such as pumpkin bread, pie, soup, muffins…

  • Compost any leftovers (if you are carving a pumpkin, you can compost the cut-out pieces).

Costumes: Halloween costumes are unfortunately a huge issue. It is fast fashion at its peak: costumes are often only worn once before being thrown away. Most of these costumes also contain a lot of plastic materials in them. Instead of buying a brand new costume, consider:

  • DIY your costume: this way your costume will be more unique anyways. Grab a couple of friends and make a fun day out of it. The possibilities are endless!

  • Thrift your costume

  • Use clothes and other items that you already own.

  • Consider purchasing elements of a costume that you could wear again.

It’s hard to resist all the cute home decor and spooky Halloween decor this time of year. However, a lot of these trinkets are also made cheaply from hard to recycle plastics, with the intent of being disposed of as soon as November 1st. Instead try:

  • Thrifting your decor: you would be surprised how much fun, unique decor you can find at thrift stores, not to mention how cheap they can be!

  • Reuse your decor each year

  • DIY: along with your pumpkin carving and costume decor, why not make a couple of decorations as well? Search on Pinterest for tons of creative ideas.
